Workshops 2005-2007

Compost Doctor Workshop

Workshops have been held in 12 schools in Lewes and Hastings for parents to see how they can reduce their waste, which compost bin to choose and how to sort out common composting problems. Workshops were also run at Lewes Organic Allotment Project and allotment sites in Hastings, where there are compost demonstration areas with many different types of bins, and visitors can see the benefits of applying compost to growing beds.

Individual home visits

Common problems include bin contents becoming too wet or dry, contents not breaking down, bin smelling unpleasant. A visit from the Compost Doctors helped get a system back on track by giving practical help with re-packing a bin and offering advice for making it work. Individual home visits cost £2 each.

Compost 1
This bin needed emptying, chopping contents into smaller pieces and adding plenty of carbon – shredded and scrumpled up paper, cardboard, egg boxes, etc.
Mrs Read
Mrs. Read (right) had a small town garden but produced fantastic compost on her patio. The Compost Doctors helped get the finished product out of the composter.

Getting together with a group of friends or neighbours and having a group visit is fun! Different types of composting problems were covered and people were able to see how different set-ups work. It is easier to carry on with composting if you are encouraged and helped by a group, and group visits were free for everyone involved.
