Lewes Organic Allotment Project
Lewes Organic Allotment Project is a community growing space for people living in Lewes and its environs. The allotment is made up of 8 plots which are worked together by members; produce is shared. Fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers are all grown on the Highdown, Nevill site.
An annual membership of £12 for individuals and £15 for families covers the cost of seeds, tools and manure. The rent for the Town Council site is paid for by Lewes District Council, which was instrumental in starting the project under the Local Agenda 21 plan.
Workshops about composting are held on site in Spring and Autumn and growing workshops for adults are planned.

The Lottie ProjectThe Lottie Project is a growing project for Lewes Schools. Year 4 children attend a series of workshops in Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter to enable them to see the cycle of growing. They plant up and nurture a variety of produce which is picked when ready and taken back to school to prepare, cook and eat.
The project has been particularly successful for children who find the classroom challenging; they often thrive in the hands-on environment of the allotment. Many children are happy to try a wide range of vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers if they have grown the produce themselves ñ and are often surprised to find that they like it!
Related craft activities are also enjoyed; drawing with chalk and charcoal from the site, dyeing cloth using vegetables and berries, natural sculptures using found objects. The children are also able to find out about native species of plants and wildlife in the wildlife area, there is a good slow worm and common lizard population and many butterflies and moths, also frogs, toads and newts in the small pond.
